On the tenth anniversary of the original iPhone release, top Apple executives gathered in the brand new Steve jobs Theater to unveil their new line of products: the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, 4th generation Apple TV, and Watch Series 3. While there has been a lot of news surrounding ground-breaking facial recognition software and fun Animojis, the real game-changer that was revealed was Apple’s upgraded video technology. Just in case you missed the show, we have all of the details about these new video features and how you can include them in your upcoming projects.
Inside the New iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X
Apple’s popular smartphone camera just got better with a major technology overhaul that will offer creators the most advanced video viewing and capture experiences to date. On the video viewing side, the standard iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are equipped with Retina HD displays and True Tone, which automatically adjusts the white balance of the display to match the surrounding area. This will provide users with a more natural, paper-like viewing along with the best color accuracy in the industry. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus also built with redesigned speakers that are 25% louder than previous models and offers a deeper bass for richer sounding videos. The premium iPhone X takes this viewing experience even further, by offering users edge-to-edge display, an OLED screen, and Super Retina Display for more precise color contrast and richer colors.
In addition to a better video viewing experience, Apple boasts that the future line of iPhones will “deliver the highest quality video capture ever in a smartphone.” The brand new 12-megapixel camera has a larger and faster sensor, taking in 80% more light for better color saturation and less noise. More impressively, the new smartphones will be able to shoot cinema-quality 4K videos up to 60 fps, and higher definition slow-motion videos up to 240 fps. The enhanced video encoder provides real-time image and motion analytics for optimal video quality and stabilization. The iPhone X will also feature wide-angle and telephoto cameras for optical zoom as well as digital zoom up 6x times for video content. All three phones support HEIF and HEVC for twice the video compression and storage. Most importantly, Apple increased the battery life for these new phones, so now creators will have 2 extra hours to watch or shoot high-quality videos before having to charge!
Apple Spotlights Augmented Reality Technology
Apple is attempting to bring AR to mainstream consumers by developing custom technology and baking it into its new iPhones and iOS 11. First, Apple revealed new A11 Bionic chip, often referred to as ‘the smartest chip ever in a smartphone’. The new chip will feature a six-core CRU design for increased performance and faster load times. Additionally, each camera was individually calibrated for accurate motion tracking that is custom tuned for AR. Apple even builds out a new framework, ARKit, within iOS11, offering developers a platform to build apps that let users place visual content on top of real world scenery. To demonstrate how AR will be viewed through the new iPhone’s camera lens, Apple provided demos ranging from gaming to the MLB, that illustrated how immersive and fluid this new technology will be.
Stream in 4K with Apple TV
After a long wait, Apple is officially jumping on the bandwagon and unveiled its new Apple TV that fully supports 4K Ultra HD resolution. The new smart TV will be twice the vertical and horizontal resolutions of older HD TVs. Alongside 4K, Apple TV will also support Dolby Vision and HDR10 for brighter highlights and an expanded range of colors. The new TV will run on the A10x processor, making it twice as fast as the older version. The Apple TV is just one part of Apple’s expanding TV and movie agenda. Similar to Facebook, Apple may be moving towards developing its own original content. Its successful release of Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke are good indicators of what’s to come.
Whether you are Team Apple or Team Android, everyone can appreciate how the powerful technology built into these new gadgets are taking video to the next level.
